🎬 Talent Spotlight: Liesa Van der AA

🎬 TALENT SPOTLIGHT: LIESA VAN DER AA

Belgian artist and composer Liesa Van der Aa continues to expand her singular musical universe across albums and cinema, combining emotional intensity with fearless experimentation.

She has just released her new album Caramel, her most intimate and uncompromising work to date. Like “a snail on a razorblade,” the record wraps warmth around sharp edges without ever losing its bite. The album has been met with widespread acclaim: De Standaard calls it “her fourth and best album,” while De Tijd praises the “beautifully crafted” double album for its galvanizing honesty. Focus Knack highlights its daring blend of distorted funk and soulful harmonies, and Humo hails Caramel as “a pearl,” drawing comparisons to Fiona Apple, James Blake, and Nina Simone.

Alongside the album release, Van der Aa composed the original score for Frontera, directed by Judith Colell. The film recently had its international premiere at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn and has just opened in Spanish cinemas. Earlier this month, the film had its US premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and will travel further to Filmfestival Oostende early February. Coinciding with the Spanish theatrical release, the official soundtrack was just launched, further showcasing Van der Aa’s evocative and cinematic musical voice.

With Caramel and Frontera, Liesa Van der Aa once again affirms her position as one of Belgium’s most distinctive and adventurous musical storytellers, moving effortlessly between the worlds of songwriting and screen composition.
