Frédéric Vercheval

Frédéric Vercheval is a Belgian composer whose music blends classical lyricism, jazz inflection, and textural sound design into a distinctive cinematic voice. Born in Brussels, he began playing piano at the age of eight and went on to study at the Jazz Studio in Antwerp. While largely self-taught in film composition, his instinct for musical storytelling soon made him one of Belgium’s most sought-after screen composers.

Frédéric has composed original music for over forty films, series, and documentaries. His long-term collaborations with directors Lucas Belvaux and Olivier Masset-Depasse have led to some of his most celebrated scores, including Pas son genre, Chez Nous, Cages, and Duelles (Mothers’ Instinct)—the latter earning him both the World Soundtrack Award for Best Score for a Belgian Production and the Magritte Award for Best Original Score.

In 2025, he won another Magritte Award for his music for Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, further establishing his reputation for emotionally charged and finely crafted film scores. Other recent credits include The Pact (Bille August), Les Volets Verts (Jean Becker), La Place d’une autre (Aurelia Georges), Baghdad Messi (Sahim Omar Kalifa), and the 3rd chapter of Largo Winch (Olivier Masset-Depasse).

Across his diverse work, Vercheval explores the dialogue between image and sound, balancing expressive orchestral writing with subtle, minimalist textures.
Between 2011 and 2018, he taught film music analysis at the IAD and currently serves as President of the Belgian Screen Composers Guild.
